Protect the night from the ecological consequences of light pollution.

Human-made sky glow threatens plants and animals. It alters animal behavior and changes the relationship among species. It threatens human health in ways we’re just beginning to understand. We can retain the light humans need while making simple changes to help save the dark.

What is Light Pollution?

Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or intrusive artificial light that brightens the night more than necessary. It disrupts natural wildlife patterns, wastes energy, and has been linked to negative health effects in animals, including humans.

Easy Ways to Help

Simple changes at home or work can make a big difference:

  • Use outside lighting only when and where it’s needed

  • Use motion sensor lights and/or timers

  • Remove decorative lighting (even small, shielded decorative lights impact ecosystems—just ask a frog or moth)

  • Keep curtains and blinds closed at night so inside light doesn’t get out

  • Help spread the word in a nice and polite way 😃

Adjusting even one light fixture can make a huge difference—and the more people who adjust even one fixture the better. We’re seeing an exponential increase in light pollution—but you can be part of the movement to slow that trend!
